CLEVELAND, OH – Community leader and longtime advocate Beverly Owens-Jackson has officially announced her candidacy for Cleveland City Council in Ward 5. With a lifetime of experience overcoming challenges and uplifting others, she is ready to bring strong, compassionate leadership to the community.

“As someone who has lived through and overcome addiction, homelessness, and domestic abuse, I understand the struggles our community faces because I’ve lived them,” said Owens-Jackson. “Ward 5 needs leadership that is not only present but deeply invested in the future of our families, businesses, and youth.”

Owens-Jackson has spent years working to improve the lives of residents. She has held leadership positions with SEIU 1199, co-chaired mentoring programs, and founded CHOICES, a group dedicated to empowering African American students. Her work in the community has earned her numerous honors, including the Humanitarian Award from the National Action Network and the Community Champion Award from Cuyahoga Community College.

Owens-Jackson’s campaign will focus on four major issues: food insecurity, affordable and sustainable housing, community safety, and strong leadership. She is committed to fighting for better access to fresh food, protecting residents from displacement, investing in youth programs to prevent crime, and leading with integrity and transparency.

“The challenges in Ward 5 aren’t just policy issues; they’re personal,” she said. “We need real solutions that come from lived experience, not empty promises. I am ready to fight for our community, restore hope, and ensure that every resident has the opportunity to thrive.”
